Water (Sea Monsters)

niche size: 22" wide x 9" high x 9" deep
2020
sea horse and puffer fish specimens, glass jar, archival inkjet print

The sea monster with wings and the body of a snake was reproduced from a woodcut in Conrad Gessner's Historia Animalium, published in Zurich between 1551 and 1587. In this five volume zoological encyclopedia, Gessner attempted to describe all of the animals known at the time.

Seahorses, with their tightly curled tails, heads that resemble the head of a horse, and upright swimming posture, are fish that resemble a fanciful composite animal. They figure into Greek and Norse mythology.
