Starry Transit Planisphere

50" high x 40" wide x 15" deep
2005
cast and etched bronze, cast iron, steel, digital prints, marbleized paper

A planisphere is an astronomical instrument that shows which stars are visible in the sky for a particular latitude, day of the year, and hour of the day. This planisphere, built for the latitude of the Washburn Observatory, has paired maps of the Northern and the Southern Celestial Hemispheres. The maps are digital reproductions from Black's General Atlas of the World, published in 1856. Photograph by Eric Ferguson.
