Six Stories, Window Six Drawing Machine

dimensions variable
2013-2014
mixed media

Partway through the Six Stories exhibition, window six was changed to include a group of 19th century portraits that show variations in photo technology such as hand-coloring on enlarged paper prints and photo projections redrawn in charcoal.

The artist collaborated with David Appleyard to create a “drawbot”, shown in the foreground. This 21st century automaton works on similar principles to a plotter that draws vector graphics. It is operated by custom electronics and software that drive stepper motors and a servo to precisely place the pen. The drawbot delighted visitors by drawing linear reproductions of several of the photographs in the exhibition.
