Mouse King

19.5" x 19.5" x 8"
2012
wood, mouse skeletons, mirrors, brass, pigments

Mouse King is lined with angled mirrors to create a view of endlessly repeating sections of the interior landscape. Mirror illusions such as this one date back to the Early Modern and Renaissance period in Europe, when the rules of linear perspective were developed.

This piece was inspired by natural history specimens of rats that died after their tails became tangled together in the nest. Specimens like this were highly desirable for cabinet of curiosities collections. They were called rat kings.
