Loca Miraculi, Gallery One: The Mineral Cabinet

dimensions variable
2008-2013
mahogany and white pine cabinet, minerals, shells

Collections of specimens from the mineral kingdom included things we no longer classify as minerals. Along with rocks and metals, these collections included natural materials that were harder to classify such as shells, coral and fossils. Coral, for example, seemed to early natural philosophers to bridge the plant, animal and mineral kingdoms.

Desk and bookcase, ca. 1750. Carving attributed to Henry Hardcastle, New York, New York.
